The Carignan grapes in this Weon bottle were hand harvested from a ten hectare vineyard tucked inside the Maule Valley - a rolling, green landscape spanning Chile's countryside, from the Andean foothills to the Pacific Ocean. This wine is light, evoking hints of mulberry, plum and violets. The Maule's Secano Interior has been at the cradle of the American viticulture for over five centuries. Try this wine slightly chilled or however you enjoy your refreshing reds.

TASTING NOTES

This 100% unoaked Carignan is from the Maule region in Chile. Notes of blackberry and cassis dusted by cinammon and cedar show on the nose. The palate shows hints of mushroom and earth tones underneath the dark fruit. A touch of black pepper spice and a solid dose of structural tannins round out the wine.

Fermented in open lagars, with only a short maceration, David Marcel’s unoaked Maule Valley Carignan has appealing red plum and cherry fruit, a nip of tannin and crunchy acidity. A less austere expression of the grape.

THE STORY TO KNOW

David Marcel arrived to Chile fresh off the boat from France as a twenty-two year old winemaker hungry for new terroir. After graduating with a wine degree from Montplelier, David worked for large wineries producing significant quantities of wine while simultaneously falling in love with his Chileño bride. David eventually decided to make his home in Chile, and two decades later, began producing wines primarily composed of Pais and Carignan from some of Chile’s most prized heritage old vines. David is a force and one of the most generous humans we have ever encountered. He is not only a strong voice for Viña Maitia, but he is also a tireless advocate for the artisan winemakers of Chile and continues to lead a path for his contemporaries, typically putting himself after others. David’s wines are typically understated, extremely drinkable wines of great value.
