“A great Malbec from Uco and very nicely priced,” says the Wine Advocate

92pts Wine Advocate Produced with grapes from Los Chacayes, the 2017 BenMarco Malbec has a mixture of floral and black and red fruit aromas with some spicy and toasty notes, coming through as aromatic and expressive. It has a juicy palate with freshness and a very tasty and expressive finish. 200,000 bottles produced.

In 1999 Susana Balbo crafted a line of wines to showcase the ripe fruit expression of her sustainably-farmed Mendoza vineyards. The philosophy is a simple one: grow great grapes and make wines that are true to their place. Minimal intervention during the growing season and through harvest allows the true fruit character to develop. Combine this with Susana's winemaking skills and the result is wines that express the powerful fruit flavors, the ripe tannins and the incredible length and balance that can only come from this one place: Mendoza.

The Uco Valley’s “Vista Flores” and “Chacayes” appellations are chilly regions in Argentina, with nighttime temperatures dropping as much as 30 degrees. This climactic happening gives this Malbec its classic definition and structure and makes the wine similar stylistically to red Bordeaux but with the color, extraction and chewy, forward fruit of the New World. From its ripe berry and roasted coffee nose through to its finish of lush red and blackberry fruit and integrated tannin, this Malbec will get deep nods of approval from Cab and Merlot lovers bent on both sides of the pond.

BenMarco Malbec is a testament to Uco Valley, from which it hails, proffering aromas of fresh black fruit and floral notes of violets. The palate shows great balance, very fine tannins, and a thread of acidity going through its core, lifting it up and going its length.

BenMarco is all about viticulture. Having planted more than 3,000 acres of vineyards across Argentina’s diverse terroirs, Edgardo “Edy” Del Popolo, General Manager of Susana Balbo Wines in Mendoza and head winemaker for BenMarco, is Argentina’s most knowledgeable winegrower. He has tasted almost every piece of dirt!
BenMarco wines are made with minimal intervention to allow for the purest interpretation of what’s underground on the extreme sites where the grapes for BenMarco are grown. “I try to avoid adding my influence to BenMarco wines,” Edy says. “What I really like to see is what the vines can do, without any kind of winemaking influence.”
Edy grows three red wines from three distinct, high-elevation sub-zones of Mendoza: a Malbec from Los Chacayes, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Los Árboles, and Expresivo, a red blend from Gualtallary. Since the inaugural 1999 vintage, all three wines have consistently received outstanding scores from each of the four leading American wine publications.
