The 2014 Barolo Monvigliero has really tightened up after its recent bottling. Today, what comes through is an unusually potent, virile expression of Monvigliero, rather than the more aromatic, perfumed style that is typical of both this site and wine. Readers should expect a brooding, classically austere Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind.

The 2014 Barolo Monvigliero is the top-shelf expression from this storied estate in Verduno. This is a compact and firm red wine with a delicate delivery of aromas. It starts off with red currant, spice, mild tobacco and powdered licorice. There are pretty floral tones of rose hip and lavender that are characteristic of this celebrated vineyard cru. Only 6,000 bottles were made.

Rose, perfumed berry, exotic spice and new leather aromas are at the forefront on this elegantly structured red. On the palate, polished fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity offset juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and baking spice.

A magnum of Barolo is quite the occasion. Vinous says “Fratelli Alessandria is one of Piedmont’s under-the-radar jewels. The Alessandrias make compelling, classically-built wines from estate vineyards in Verduno and Monforte d’Alba. Best of all, the wines remain very reasonably priced by today’s standards. Readers who enjoy structured, age-worthy Barolos won’t want to be without these wines.”

The wine can still benefit from some longer aging, though by all means, drink it now if you please! Though it will be perfect for that event in a few years that calls for Barolo, especially in magnum. Maybe just make up an event to create an occasion for this wine, it certainly deserves it!

Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, the palate is compact and tight, but incredibly expressive with dense aromas of rose, berries, spice, tobacco and anise. Rich with cherries, tart raspberries and currants lead to a palate-pleasing, defined finish.

Fratelli Alessandria is a Piedmontese wine estate in Langhe, in northwest Italy. It was founded at the start of the 19th century and has been the property of the Alessandria family since 1870. The estate is focused on the cultivation of the Nebbiolo grape variety under the Barolo DOCG, but also produces a range of wines from other local grape varieties including Dolcetto, Barbera, Favorita and the rare red grape Pelaverga.

The estate covers 12 hectares (30 acres) of land in Verduno and Monforte d'Alba. There are a total of nine different vineyard plots with a variety of different terroirs. From these vineyards, Fratelli Alessandria produces a selection of Barolo wines, including three single-cru expressions, from the Monvigliero, San Lorenzo and Gramolere vineyards.

In addition to its Barolo wine range, Alessandria also makes a collection of regional wines, including those under the Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba and Langhe titles, as well as a single Verduno Pelaverga wine from 3ha (7 acres) of vines. This wine was first made in 1973 and today has a sizeable production of around 20,000 bottles a year.
