Kiwi Pinots are All Sorts of Fun

Now, my favorite Pinot Noirs most often come from Burgundy, but that's not to say there aren't awesome Pinots elsewhere in the world. Enter Sacred Hill. New Zealand is a relatively new area for my palate (outside of Sauv Blanc of course), and they are showing me that there is plenty more beyond the horizon. 

Earl grey & cola aromas jump out to the nose. A delicious palate of black cherry cola, goji berry and light cranberry. It shows a medium cherry finish. I wonder if this is what the Hobbits were drinking in the Shire?

Our sourcing team bowed their heads in a solemn act of respect when they tasted the Sacred Hill Pinot Noir. This holy grail of cool climate Pinot Noir shows off the lustrous tableau of bright red fruit, rich earth, and silken chocolate that is the epitome of excellent Pinot Noir.

Along the paradise that is Marlborough, Sacred Hill oversees their 6 unique vineyard sites with extraordinary skill. David and Mark Mason joined forces with winemaker Tony Bish started their delicious journey in 1986. The Mason brothers know every aspect of growing great wines. As well they should since their father Ian was one of the original pioneers of diversifying New Zealand’s breathtaking vineyards. Tony Bish turned to winemaking after realizing that making a living as a professional surfer was far harder than he originally anticipated. Three decades later, Bish is riding waves of international acclaim.

Where skill and know-how meet incredible terroir, that’s where you find the balance of Sacred Hill’s Pinot Noir. The 2014 vintage offered up a frost-free spring and some of the most flavorful fruit anyone had seen in years. Capturing the perfect storm in a bottle, Sacred Hill’s 2014 Pinot Noir sips and lingers like a sacrosanct ode to Marlborough itself.

Why we love it:

  • With a glowing 91 points from the Wine Spectator, New Zealand’s 2014 vintage is not one you’ll want to miss. “A bumper harvest, with excellent wines across the board; particularly exciting in Hawkes Bay.” It’s a sentiment that echoed across wine publications the world over.
  • Thanks to their long relationships with the Hell’s Gate Vineyard and Hammond Estate Vineyard, Sacred Hill gets the best of the best. Both sites are well know for their optimal location and climate.
  • Named for its sublime location which looks up to Mount Puketapu, “Sacred Hill” is the English translation of the Māori name for the Mount.
  • Sacred Hill saw the need for good land stewardship early on. For several years they’ve participated as active members of the Sustainable Winegrowing NZ initiatives. As on of the first to be accredited by the program, Sacred Hill is also part of the NZ Packaging Accord which seeks to extend their environment impact globally by reducing environmental waste and excess packaging.

A lustrous color of dark garnet red. The complex aromas draw you in with dark red fruits, a mosaic of savory notes and hints of roasted meats mingling with black cherry. The palate is richly layered with ripe red berries, thyme, and further savory interest. This is a supple, fleshy wine with a lingering taste of chocolate and raspberries.


Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along with the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family, and food.
