93pts, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hauts de Barville is a classic blend of 70% Grenache and 15% each Mourvèdre and Syrah. Fine notes of pencil shavings underscore cherry and apricot fruit in this full-bodied, rich, velvety textured wine that offers plenty of weight yet manages to retain a sense of elegance.

92pts, Wine Spectator
Lovely, with crushed plum and raspberry fruit that is ripe but fresh and racy in feel, lined with subtle violet, garrigue and singed apple wood notes. Shows a mouthwatering swath of tobacco and warm stone accents through the finish. Best from 2020 through 2030. 6,670 cases made, 2,540 cases imported.

90-92pts, Jeb Dunnuck
Starting off the 2016 reds, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hauts de Barville is a blend of 70% Grenache and the balance equal parts Mourvèdre and Syrah, aged in barrels (10% new) and concrete tanks. Blackberries, roasted herbs, hints of minerality and licorice all give way to a tight, concentrated barrel sample that has good acidity and notable tannin. It has lots of potential and should be more expressive from bottle.

90pts, Vinous
Bright ruby. Black raspberry, cherry pit, licorice and pungent flowers on the nose. Bitter cherry and dark berry flavors unfold slowly and pick up a peppery quality that adds back-end spiciness. Gentle tannins frame the clinging finish, which hangs on with very good, dark-berry-tinged persistence.

Ah the glories of 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an exceptional year producing wines that are aromatic, powerful, round yet fine and balanced. The Les Hauts de Barville from Brotte has a distinct richness and unctuousness that creates a weighty mouthfeel, but still manages to be impeccably elegant.

Maison Brotte remains a family-run winery dating back to 1931. Founder Charles Brotte, a pioneer in his own right, was the creator of the famous “La Fiole du Pape” a uniquely shaped bottle expressing the gnarled and twisted vines typical of the region due to their struggle of growing against the Mistral wind.

This wine, a classic blend of 70% Grenache with 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre has intense concentration and a velvety texture. Notes of cherries, blackberries, roasted herbs and garrigue, dried apricots, tobacco, warm minerality and a subtle licorice note making it an immensely enjoyable red. Expressive, age worthy and a CdP for the enthusiasts.

THE STORY TO KNOW

Having long time expertise in the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Brotte House knows very well the “terroirs” of the area. “Les Hauts de Barville” has distinctive richness and unctuosity, in the same style as Domaine Barville,  Brotte family’s estate wine in the name of ancestors, the Barville. We select varieties which sublimate the majority Grenache on the best exposed terroirs of pebbles, limestone and sand of the prestigious cru of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The selection gives this great wine beautiful concentration, a rich symphony of aromatic notes : red fruits (strawberry mainly), spices, truffles, “guarrigue” (“scrub land”). A patient maturation in 100 year old large oak casks and French oak barrels during one year develop the smoothness and richness of aromas and tannins.
